An Awareness Workshop at the College of Fine Arts on the Risks of Irregular Migration and the Need to Promote Citizenship Values
The College of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad hosted an awareness workshop organized by the Continuing Education Unit on the phenomenon of irregular migration and its social and psychological impacts on youth. The workshop was entitled “The Risks of Irregular Migration and the Promotion of Citizenship Values.”
The workshop was delivered by Mr. Majid Kamil, Head of the College’s Human Rights Unit, who presented a range of facts and underlying motives that drive some young people to fall prey to irregular migration networks. These networks exploit their needs or aspirations for better living conditions, drawing them into perilous journeys with uncertain outcomes.
During his talk, Mr. Kamil emphasized that migrant-smuggling mafias have become a serious threat to the lives of young people, as many are subjected to deception and exploitation, often ending up confronting human trafficking gangs or being forced into work that violates human dignity in transit or destination countries.
The workshop was attended by Dr. Raafat Hammoudi, Head of the Continuing Education Unit, along with a group of college students who took part in open discussions focusing on the role of academic institutions in raising awareness and the importance of strengthening a sense of responsibility and belonging to curb this phenomenon.
At the conclusion of the event, the speaker stressed the necessity of providing support and awareness programs for young people and encouraging them to invest their capabilities within the country rather than risking their lives through irregular migration.
