Department of Design
The Department of Design is one of the most important departments in the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Baghdad. It is the first design department to be established in Iraqi universities. The department was initially established under the Department of Visual Arts at “Academy” of Fine Arts. The first majoring group of students was enrolled in the 1972-1973 academic year. The two major groups are graphic design and industrial design.

The Design Department was established independently in the academic year of 1982 – 1983 and it’s been operating until now. It continues to develop and as such began to address other disciplines that are added to the department. The cognitive, scientific, and applied diversity clarifies each branch of the department through the following scientific disciplines:
- Graphic Design
- Industrial Design
- Textile Design
- Interior Design
The most important goals that the design department seeks to achieve are:
- Preparing majoring designers in the fields of design (graphic, industrial, textile and interior design).
- Stimulating the talent and skill of the designer through training and practicing so the student qualifies to work in public or private sector institutions.
- Motivate and assist the students to study and learn technical techniques and train them on the equipment, machinery, and raw materials that the designer needs in his field of work after graduating as a designer.
